译者行为批评视域下功能性人物叙事英译研究——以《西游记》小妖称名为例被引量：9

English translation of functional characters'narrative in view of translator's behavior criticism:A case study on the naming of minor demons in Journey to the West

摘要《西游记》中的一些具名小妖虽属边缘化人物,但构成功能性人物叙事,成为宏观叙事不可或缺的逻辑链条。本文以12名具名小妖的称名英译为研究对象,对比余国藩、詹纳尔两个全译本功能性人物叙事的译者行为特征。研究发现:1)余译本在人物称名以求真为主,务实为辅,但能同时确保功能性叙事的求真;詹译本的人物称名求真,但是部分人物的功能性叙事体现了务实倾向。由此可见,微观层面的求真不一定能实现宏观层面的求真,但是余译本在两个层面上保持了较好的平衡;2)两个译者在部分人物称名的理解上存在差异;3)“保留”在两个译本中使用频率最高,不同的是詹译本用“省略”为权宜之计,而余译本采取“转化”策略。本研究把人物称名和功能性叙事两个层面的译者行为维度纳入翻译批评范畴,即从微观和宏观两个角度评价译本如何实现原著的文学性。 The named minor demons in Journey to the West,albeit seemingly being marginal characters,constitute the functional narrative as an indispensable logical wedge of the macro story.This study delves into 12 named minor demons'English translation conducted by William Jenner and Antony Yu.The findings are summarized as follows:Firstly,as for Yu's version,the translated names display a tendency of dominated"truth-seeking"and auxiliary"utility-attaining",whilst the strand of functional narrative also maintains"truth-seeking".For Jenner's,although the translated names of minor demons keep truth-seeking,the strand of narrative manifests a degrading of utility-attaining.Therefore,there might exist a discrepancy of translator's behavior between micro and macro levels.Overall,Yu's version achieves a better bal-ance.Secondly,two translators have their own understanding on certain names of minor demons.Thirdly,"preservation"is the most frequently adopted strategies by the two translators.The only difference is that Jenner adopted"omission"a as a matter of expediency,while Yu used"conversion".This study brings conceptual and narrative strands into the consid-eration of translator behavior,i.e.,evaluating the literariness of translated literature from both macro and micro perspec-tives.
