The article examines the internal sequence and semantic changes of antonymic compounds on the basis of a corpus analysis of disyllabic compounds in A Dictionary of Contemporary Chinese (5th edition). It is argued that 1) the internal sequence of antonymic compounds in Chinese generally follows the Pollyanna Principle, namely, placing the positive before the negative; 2) the Pollyanna Principle is subject to phonetic restrictions in certain conditions; 3) antonymic compounds undergo a process of conceptual integration which results in semantic changes by means of extension, polarization, metaphorization and metonymization; 4) the semantic changes resulting from conceptual integration are closely related to our integrative, metaphorical thinking and affective inclinations.
