摘要
推动数字化转型是企业适应数字经济时代的重大经营抉择,在不确定性风险面前,当受制于旧有高管“路径依赖”的制约时,企业能否依托CEO继任来源激发数字化转型活力目前尚无系统性研究。本文使用中国上市公司财务数据及CEO简历数据,考察CEO继任来源对企业数字化转型的影响及机制。研究发现:来源于非内部晋升的CEO使企业推动数字化转型的概率更高,这一结论在调整样本容量、调整被解释变量衡量指标、控制产业时间趋势、调整时间窗口、加入遗漏变量、工具变量检验等稳健性检验之后依然成立。进一步地,来源于企业外部的CEO继任主要通过影响企业战略来推进企业数字化转型,具体表现为CEO外部继任会显著影响企业战略变革的倾向、企业战略的激进程度及企业创新战略的偏好。异质性分析表明,源于非内部晋升的CEO对数字化转型的影响在有多元化职业背景、有市场营销背景、有学术背景的高管企业样本中更为明显。本研究进一步丰富了战略变革视域下不同类型CEO影响企业数字技术应用的差异性的画像研究,对企业如何优化高管团队来源结构、完善职业经理人市场来赋能数字化转型提供了经验证据与管理启示。
Promoting digital transformation is a major business choice for enterprises to adapt to the era of digital economy.In the face of uncertainty and risk,whether enterprises can rely on CEO succession sources to stimulate the vitality of digital transformation has not been further studied when they are constrained by the“path dependence”of old executives.This paper uses the financial data of Chinese listed companies and CEO resume data to investigate the impact and mechanism of CEO succession sources on enterprise digital transformation.The study found that CEOs from non-internal promotion make enterprises more likely to promote digital transformation.This conclusion is still true after adjusting the sample size,adjusting the measurement indicators of explained variables,controlling the time trend of the industry,adjusting the time window,adding missing variables,tool variable test and other robustness tests.Furthermore,CEO succession from outside the enterprise mainly promotes the digital transformation of the enterprise by influencing the enterprise strategy.Specifically,CEO succession from outside will significantly affect the tendency of enterprise strategic change,the degree of radicalization of enterprise strategy and the preference of enterprise innovation strategy.Heterogeneity analysis shows that the impact of CEOs from non-internal promotion on digital transformation is more significant in the samples of senior executives with diversified professional background,marketing background and academic background.This study further enriches the research on the differences of various types of CEOs'influence on the application of digital technology in enterprises from the perspective of strategic change,and provides empirical evidence and management enlightenment on how to balance the source structure of senior management team and improve the professional manager market to enable digital transformation.
