摘要
几年前,本文作者提出,中国文化走出去,外语学科应大有作为,现在看来这一预言已经初步奏效。但是依然有不少人看不到这一点,认为外语学科可有可无,其作用主要在帮助其他学科的学生学好外语,尤其是英语,以便使这些学生为中国学术的国际化作出贡献。作者认为这远远不是外语学科的学者的目标。在当前国家实施的"中国文化走出去"的战略中,外语学科的学者已经起到并且仍将发挥不可替代的作用,因为他们所从事的并非简单的语言教学和研究,而更是研究外国的人文学科,因此他们只要打好扎实的外语基础,具有广博的人文学科知识,就完全有能力用外语讲述中国的故事,为中国文化有效地走向世界作出应有的贡献。
Several years ago,the present author put forward an idea that in promoting Chinese culture world wide,the discipline of foreign languages and literature could play an important role,which has been more or less proved true.But still,quite a few people have not yet seen this.They hold that the discipline of foreign languages and literature is not necessarily important for a university,for the main task for teachers of the discipline is to teach their students language skill enabling them to contribute to the internationalization of Chinese academia.To the author,however,this is far from the object of China’s discipline of foreign languages and literature.In the present national project of promoting Chinese culture world wide,scholars of the discipline have already contributed quite a bit and will continue to make irreplaceable contributions.For their role does not merely lie in language teaching and research,but rather,in international humanities research.Therefore,having a good command of foreign languages and wide knowledge of humanities,they are quite able to tell Chinese stories in foreign languages,thus enabling Chinese culture to go global more effectively.
