The Criticism of Short Literary Essays in Late Ming Dynasty in General Catalogue of the Complete Works of the Four Databases

摘要《四库全书总目》对晚明小品的评价以否定性为主。四库馆臣针对晚明小品存在的离经叛道、内容杂乱、不著出典、慕奇好异、语言纤佻、体例不当、考证疏舛等诸多问题,进行了激烈的批评。同时,《总目》对部分持论笃实、文辞雅洁、考据精核、富于史料价值、作者具有高尚道德品格的晚明小品,给予了一定程度的肯定。《总目》的晚明小品批评,主要是受官方哲学即程朱理学以及考据学风的影响。由于时代的局限性,《总目》对晚明小品积极和进步的一面认识不足。不过,《总目》也敏锐地指出了晚明小品的一些弊病。客观看待《总目》的晚明小品批评,有助于今人全面把握晚明小品的优缺点、理性评价其价值。 The evaluations of Short Literary Essays in Late Ming Dynasty in General Catalogue of the Complete Works of the Four Databases were mainly negative.The secretaries of Institute of the Four Databases made a fierce criticism of the many problems of Short Literary Essays in Late Ming Dynasty.These problems included deviation from Neo-Confucianism,content of mixed and disorderly,lack of the explanations of allusions,pursuit of singularities,the frivolous language,the inappropriate compilation style,and the careless textual research.At the same time,General Catalogue of the Complete Works of the Four Databases acknowledged some Short Literary Essays in Late Ming Dynasty for their pragmatic views,elegant language,rigorous textual research,historical value,or written by authors of noble moral qualities.The criticism of Short Literary Essays in Late Ming Dynasty in General Catalogue of the Complete Works of the Four Databases was mainly influenced by the official philosophy,Neo-Confucianism,and the style of textology.Due to the limitations of the times,the secretaries of Institute of the Four Databases did not fully appreciate the positive and progressive aspects of Short Literary Essays in Late Ming Dynasty.However,they keenly pointed out some of the shortcomings of Short Literary Essays in Late Ming Dynasty.We should look at the criticism of Short Literary Essays in Late Ming Dynasty in General Catalogue of the Complete Works of the Four Databases objectively.It is helpful for us to grasp the advantages and disadvantages of Short Literary Essays in Late Ming Dynasty comprehensively,and evaluate its value rationally.
