With the assistance of quantitative and qualitative research methods, the present study attempts to detect the effect of pure SR modification in terms of SR reduction on the listening comprehension of Chinese EFL learners at different English listening proficiency levels. The quantitative analyses of all the raw data disclosed that compared with normal speed,SR reduction could significantly assist the listening comprehension of both the higher and lower level students. However, when it came to the effects of SR reduction on the listening comprehension of three different question types(SC,LC and SP),students from different English proficiency backgrounds had different performance. For higher-intermediate-level students,SR reduction was of significant help for the improvement in the question type LC and SP;whereas, for lower-intermediate-level students,SR reduction exerted significant influence on the question type SC.For the remained question types, although students from both levels scored higher than they did under the normal speed version, the difference did not achieve a significant degree.
