This article elucidates two types of workers' self-organization—the cooperative team and the contractor-led team—based on the fieldwork of the garment industry in Jiaxing city,Zhejiang province. The two diverge in inner power structure, organizational commitment, and labor protection. The former is a mutual help group initiated by the local skilled female workers, empowering the workers involved with higher wages and autonomy during the labor process. The latter is a hierarchical group, with migrant workers as the majority. This article argues that the interplay of native place, skill and gender determines the pattern of workers' self-organization and thereby their bargaining power.
