The gap between translation theory and practice is due to simplification and absoluteness in the prescriptive approach to translation problems. Descriptive translation studies aim to bridge the gap. The distinction between the two approaches lies in the following four aspects: 1) to apply preexisting theories about other disciplines to translation or to account for actual translational behavior and its results; 2) to be application-oriented or to be theory-oriented; 3) to be source-oriented or to be target-oriented; 4) to be idealistic and static or to be historical in one's approach to translation problems. Underdevelopment of a descriptive branch results in plentitude of controversies in translation research in China.
