Through the study of literature geography since the late Qing Dynasty and the Republic of China,we find that the mainstream of literature geography is the existence of a civilization history mode.Scholars who initiated the field, exemplified by Liang Qichao,Liu Shipei and Wang Guowei, under mediated influence of those in Meiji Japan, mainly drew from two aspects of western theoretical resources. The first one drives from historical studies on European civilization history, represented by History of Civilization in England by H.T.Buckle and History of Civilization in Europe by F.G.Guizot The other intellectual resource on the contrary, originates from literary historical study, represented by History of English Literature by H.A.Taine,who is considered one of the two greatest scholars to have ever applied Comte’s teachings into historical interpretation along with H.T.Buckle.From1920 s and 1930 s,literary geographical study developed and elaborated this very civilization historical mode in general, which investigates the unique characteristic and its evolvement of Chinese literature centering around the discrepancy and differentiation of Northern and Southern cultures. This mode, aiming at the overall pattern of a civilization, seeks for an integration of the several existing principles that pervade it,showing its obvious limitations while presenting theoretical advantages. It impacted greatly on the academic circles then, which might be exactly why an independent literary geography discipline was not built during this time, even though not few western cultural geographical works were translated and introduced into China.
