The"Korean Wave"is an important part of the people-to-people exchanges between China and the Republic of Korea. The rise and fall of the"Korean Wave"in China reflects the changes in China-ROK relations. The fluctuation of political relations was a primary factor that led to a significant decline of the"Korean Wave"in China after the second half of 2016.However,since the"Korean Wave"has a strong civic dimension, deterioration of political relations is not enough to fully explain its decline. The"rebellion"of the Chinese K-pop fans, who have both participated in and been subject to the"Korean Wave",is a significant complementary explanation for the inward contraction and decline of the"Korean Wave"in China. In the first fifteen years of the 21 st century, the Chinese K-pop fans developed their fan identity through endogenous and external factors and formed a"fans’circle"and"culture of fans’circle".Such developments have laid the foundation for the significant shift of the position of Chinese K-pop fans from"idol first"to"when it comes to the nation, there is no idol",triggered by THAAD’s deployment in Korea in 2016.The"culture of fans’circle"combined with nationalist sentiments in this process has given rise to a new form of online nationalist expression—fan nationalism—and continued to produce a negative impact on China-ROK relations.
