The Kuomintang’s Perception and Representation of the “United Front” and the Communist Party of China’s Response During the Early Stage of the Full-scale War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression

摘要 1937年全面抗战爆发后,国民党公开发布《中国共产党宣言》(即《中共中央为公布国共合作宣言》),蒋介石也发表谈话认可两党团结抗战。随后,中共广泛宣传抗日统一战线,表示统一战线由各党派共同负责和领导。因为与自身党派观念与政策冲突,统一战线遭到国民党人的质疑与否认。国民党公开宣称容纳各党各派,在行动上却又企图合并、融化各党派。从"统一战线"的字面理解,国共对于"统一"的含义又起纷争,共产党要通过"统一战线"统一力量对外,国民党则企图统一全国。国共对"统一战线"及"统一"做出不同诠释,既缘于各自党派立场与政治观念,也有争夺抗战话语权与领导权的考虑。 After the outbreak of the Full-scale War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression,the Kuomintang eventually released the"Declaration of the Communist Party of China"to the public on September 22th,1937.Chiang Kai-shek made a statement the next day,confirming his basic position on the unity of the two parties to fight against Japan.Afterwards,the Communist Party of China made extensive publicity of the united front,and declared that the united front was under the shared responsibility and leadership of all political parties.These ideas were in conflict with the Kuomintang’s sectarian stand and policy.Thus,the united front was questioned and repudiated by the members of the Kuomintang.The Kuomintang declared"accommodating all political parties and groups"in public,but attempted to"amalgamate and merge other political forces in practice".Regarding the literal meaning of the"united front",there arose a dispute over the meaning of"unity"between the Kuomintang and the Communist Party of China.The Communist Party of China endeavored to unite internal forces against the external enemy through the"united front",while the Kuomintang attempted to unify China.The different interpretations of the CPC and the Kuomintang on the words such as"united front"and"unity"not only reflected the difference of political thoughts held by these two parties,but also embodied the two parties’contention for the leadership and the power of discourse of the AntiJapanese War.
