This paper explores the manifestation of translator subjectivity in literary translation through the lens of George Steiner’s hermeneutic translation theory, using Hsien-Yung Pai’s self-translation of Taipei People as a case study. Steiner posits that translation is an interpretive process comprising four steps: trust, aggression, incorporation, and compensation, wherein the translator plays an active and dynamic role. By analyzing Hsien-Yung Pai’s choices, interpretations, and representations of the text in translating Taipei People, this study reveals how translator subjectivity influences the selection of translation strategies and the final form of the translated text.
