The so-called helm-shaped pots discovered mainly in the Northern Shandong area have been inferred to be sea-salt production vessels of Eastern Zhou Dynasty since the 1950s.Further studies suggest that the earliest pots of this type belong to the Western Zhou period.Based on material of ar- chaeology, anthropology, ancient inscriptions and historical documents, the author points out that at the latest in the late Shang period, the helm-shaped pot was used as a sea-salt making boiler and transporta- tion vessel, and probably as a measuring pot.Sea salt was one of the important tributes to the Shang court.Seeking for the sea salt resources in Northern Shandong, the Qingzhou region recorded in the Shangshu:'Yugong'《尚书·禹贡》,was a crucial reason for the Shang Dynasty to conquer this area.
