By utilizing data from China Nutrition Survey in 1989,1991,1993 and 1997, this paper analyses the gender wage differentials in transitional China. The main findings of the paper are that wage gap between male and female workers and wage discrimination against female workers have been increasing with the process of marketization. Further analyses identify sub-groups with most increases in the gap: those with middle school or lower education, 40 years age or older, work in non-state sector or in blue-collar job; by contrast, among workers below 40-year-old, state sector workers or white-collar employees, gender gaps appear relatively insignificant.
