Addressing the impact of industrial society on vernacular architectural heritage, this article takes Japan as a case study.By examining the relationship between vernacular architecture as a novel, living heritage typology and the everyday practice of traditional construction,it analyzes how the restoration of traditional building prac-tices positively influences the perception of vernacular architecture’s value. This leads to dialectical reflections on the modern value recognition of vernacular architecture. The article first reviews the evolution of vernacular archi-tecture conservation research and highlights the contemporary challenges inherent in the dynamic transmission of such heritage. It then reveals the profound relationship between psychological motivations and physical practices in construction through a series of Japanese conservation practices—including faithful restoration and adaptive re-use—drawn from Japan’s distinctive timber heritage system within East Asia. The conclusion proposes establishing a critical paradigm for contemporary vernacular architecture, explores experimental mechanisms for sustainable conservation, and advocates for transmitting vernacular architecture as living cultural heritage. This approach aims to foster democratic cultural sharing through the revival of traditional construction, enabling vernacular architec-ture to gain new contemporary significance.
