敦煌莫高窟第332窟营造缘由考论

The Reasons for the Creation of Cave 332 in Dunhuang Mogao Caves

摘要 隋文帝首创在战场立寺,以佛事功德超度阵亡士兵亡魂的作法,这一举措后来为唐代统治者所继承。幽州悯忠寺的营建表明,至少在万岁通天元年(696年)前后,这种为战亡者立寺追福的传统仍具有相当的影响力。敦煌莫高窟第332窟开始营建的时间不晚于垂拱二年(686年),因唐蕃战争而一度中断,直到证圣元年(695年)前后,战事趋缓后才得以续建。该窟的形制和《圣历碑》的相关记载均表明,其可被视为一座地面佛寺在莫高窟崖面上的再现。营建第332窟的过程中,敦煌李氏可能借鉴了隋唐以来为阵亡将士立寺追福的传统,一方面旨在以此安抚麾下将士,另一方面则意在彰显李氏家族在敦煌的地位,并将其作为攀附李唐皇室的一种方式。 The tradition of establishing Buddhist temples on battlefields to dedicate merit for fallen soldiers was initiated by Emperor Wen of the Sui dynasty and later adopted by Tang rulers.The construction of the Temple of Compassion in Youzhou suggests that this practice remained influential at least until around 696 CE.Mogao Cave 332 at Dunhuang was likely first excavated no later than the year of 686,but construction was interrupted by the Tang-Tubo war and resumed only around 695,when the conflict was less fierce.The cave's architectural form and the Shengli Stele inscription suggest that it was designed as a cliffside reproduction of a terrestrial Buddhist temple.In constructing Cave 332,the Dunhuang Li family may have drawn upon the Sui-Tang tradition of building temples to honor fallen soldiersboth as a way to comfort the souls of the dead under their command and as a means of elevating their status by symbolically aligning with the Tang imperial lineage.
