摘要
本研究以19世纪西方视角下的中文拼合活字为研究对象,通过厘清“部首”“部件”的概念定义、梳理不同时期四款代表性拼合活字(戴尔字、巴黎活字、柏林活字与上海活字)及其创制者理念,全面回顾了这一具有特殊性与创新性的字体风格。由于汉字结构的复杂性以及当时技术手段的局限性,拼合活字仅实现了在效率与成本上的突破,却未能解决字形美观性的问题,最终逐渐被淘汰。在当今数智时代,重提这一植根于模数化思维的活字实践,旨在为当代汉字字体设计提供兼具效率与结构逻辑的新路径启示。
This study investigates how 19th-century Western missionaries conceptualized and implemented the notions of radicals and components in the development of Chinese divisible type.It critically compares Chinese and Western interpretations of radicals and assesses the ongoing relevance of modular design logic in contemporary Chinese font development.This research draws on historical documentation,including missionary memoirs,technical manuals,and printing samples,and adopts comparative analysis to trace both technological evolution and conceptual divergence.While Chinese tradition primarily regards radicals as indexing tools for dictionary compilation and character retrieval,Western missionaries interpreted them as mechanical or modular units akin to alphabetic characters,informed by the logic of Western typography.Contemporary digital design initiatives,notably the AIZI project(a collaboration between ECAL&EPFL),employ AI to algorithmically deconstruct and recombine radicals and components,allowing designers to model structural balance and refine visual harmony.This emerging synergy between culturally informed design intent and computational optimization offers new possibilities for producing Chinese typefaces that are both visually coherent and highly efficient.
