The state was central to the circulation of paper currency during the Song and Jin Dynasties, issuing paper currency in large denominations and prioritizing its fiscal functions while relegating coins in small denominations such as copper coins to use in daily transactions and thereby stratifying their roles.Factors such as increasing issuance resulted in paper currency eventually pushing coins out of circulation and creating difficulties for regular people with daily transactions when coins in small denominations were unavailable.Local officials and regular people coped with this problem in different ways, the imperial court ultimately stepped in to reshape circulation order by acknowledging devaluation of paper currency and establishing formal exchange rates for the two currency issues.
