摘要
吴趼人重要科幻小说《新石头记》在《南方报》初刊至少至第二十一回,并非过往认知的十三回或二十回,而且曾连载完结的可能性极大。《南方报·新石头记》底稿应是四十回成品,是传统章回小说写作方式和晚清报载小说方式的融合,不同于常见报载小说的随写随刊,最符合梁启超“俟全书卒业,始公诸世”的新小说写作期待。吴趼人选择报章连载该小说成品,除前此小说连载的习惯,或也受了反美华工禁约运动的刺激。比勘《南方报·新石头记》与单行本《新石头记》文字,变化之处甚少,更佐证了吴趼人是写定小说交付连载的情实。但两者间也有若干比较明显的文字损益,能令读者管窥从报载本到单行本,吴趼人在文本内外的斟酌考量。
Wu Jianren’s important science fiction novelA New Story of the Stonewas serialized till Chapter 21 in the first issues ofNanfang Daily,instead of Chapter 13 or Chapter 20 as it used to be known.It was very likely that the whole novel would have been serialized.The manuscript ofA New Story of the Stone on Nanfang Dailyis supposed to be a finished product of 40 chapters,which was the integration of the traditional writing method of Zhanghui novels and the way of newspaper publishing novels in the late Qing dynasty.Different from the common writing and publishing method of newspaper novels,it was mostly in line with Liang Qichao’s expectation of writing new novels:“The novel will not be made known to the public until it is completed.”Wu’s choice of serializing the finished work in the newspaper may have been motivated by antiAmerican labor bans on Chinese workers,apart from the habit of serializing a novel in a newspaper.There are few modifications betweenA New Story of the Stone on Nanfang Dailyand the offprintA New Story of the Stone,which is evidence to the fact that serialization came after the novel had been completed.But there are also several significant linguistic gains and losses that show Wu’s consideration of diction in and out of the text,from serials to a single text.
