21世纪初美国华裔文学的一个创作热点是针对南京大屠杀的书写。自2005年至2012年间,《紫金山燃烧之时》《金陵十三钗》《南京安魂曲》和《南京大屠杀:诗歌》等四部作品相继问世这些作品的涌现与华裔作家及历史学家张纯如密切相关。她的纪实文献《南京大屠杀:第二次世界大战中被遗忘的大屠杀》为华裔作家们提供了详实的史实素材,而她本人因揭露南京大屠杀暴行而经历的不幸也引起作家们的共情。在南京大屠杀面临见证危机的紧要关头,这些作品从施暴者、受难者、救援者和见证者等多个视角还原大屠杀全貌,成为见证那段历史的珍贵文献,警醒世人莫忘南京大屠杀。
Representing the Nanjing Massacre was increasingly popular in Chinese-American literature in the early twenty-first century. Texts on the subject proliferated in between 2005 and 2012, in particular Qi Shouhua’s When the Purple Mountain Burns(2005), Yan Geling’s The Flowers of War(2006), Ha Jin’s Nanjing Requiem(2011), and Wing Tek Lum’s The Nanjing Massacre: Poems(2012). These publications have been closely related to Iris Chang, a Chinese-American writer and historian, whose The Nanjing Massacre: The Forgotten Holocaust of World War Ⅱ(1997) accomplishes a solid and an extensive study about the history of the Massacre. Also, Chang’s depression and tragic suicide resulting from her disclosure of the forgotten history have greatly aroused the empathy of these Chinese American writers, who see the urgency and importance of remembering the Nanjing Massacre. In the witnessing crisis resulting from the dying witnesses in China and the forgotten history in the western world, these texts not only create a panoramic view of the Nanjing Massacre through the perspectives of the perpetrators, victims, rescuers and witnesses, but also become precious witnessing documents to help people remember the Chinese national tragedy in World War Ⅱ.
