Plutarch's Lives is a biography aiming at moral exhortation. However,at the center of the writing is historical narration, which forms an internal tension between the“biographical”and“historical”natures of the work.To reduce this tension,Plutarch places an emphasis on“biography”rather than“history”in the style of his writing,by recording the virtues and deeds of the protagonists reflected in the objective history that he firmly believes in.While facing non-historical sources,he often offers reasonable and historical explanations for the myths and mythical characters.Meanwhile he pleads to the reader to gracefully accept those unexplainable myths, legends and anecdotes.Furthermore,he adopts parallel comparison that is similar to some features of modern comparative history in the structure of his biography. The above-mentioned features constitute the basic narrative mode of Plutarch's Lives.
