Despite its emphasis on the concept of “diaspora” and a transnational interpretation of Black literary and cultural productions,Gilroy’s The Black Atlantic is often questioned for the neglect of the Caribbean, which is crucial to the trans-Atlantic exchange of Black culture. The Caribbean-Canadian novelist Austin Clarke’s The Polished Hoe is a major work that examines the notion of “the Black Atlantic” from the Caribbean perspective. It underscores the historical memory of slavery and the critical thinking of the racial discourse that marginalizes the Black in the same way The Black Atlantic does, but adds the Caribbean dimension by highlighting the continuation of slavery in Caribbean and the prominent position of Caribbean in the trans-Atlantic slavery trade, and by formulating a Caribbean-centered perspective through neo-slave narrative. Meanwhile,as a Canadian novel,The Polished Hoe’s subject-matter is an oblique critique of the Canadian racism, disclosing both theoretical and social significance.
