The Story of the Fragrant Hill, translated by the German missionary Karl Gützlaff in 1833,was the first narrative Chinese literary work he translated.Patrick Hanan claimed that the translation was of Xiangshan Baojuan without providing any evidence or detailed information concerning the source text.Through a close reading and comparison of the target text,we confirm that the source text of Karl Gützlaff’s translation is consistent with the“Fragrant Mountain Treasure Scrolls”printed by Hangzhou Huikong Sutra Store in the Tongzhi period. We also comment on the characteristics and influence of his translation.Due to his status as a missionary, his Chinese language level and his lack of understanding of Chinese literature and cultural tradition,Karl Gützlaff’s translation of the scroll was full of omissions and misinterpretations, which restricted his subsequent translation of Chinese narrative literature.
