Until the 16th century, books were still piled in shelves with book edges outwards in western countries. At that time, book titles or shelf locations were written on the edges or special edge decorations were designed to identify the books. At the end of the 16th century, books boomed in the west and they were placed in the shelf vertically and spines outwards. This provided more space for book designers to decorate edges.
