As a typical port town in the Southern Song and Yuan Dynasties, Ganpu has a central urban district alongside the canal(and its branch channel) which leads to the port. In the early Ming Dynasty, the Weisuo, which were built on the old urban district, adapted the previous road network, while destroyed the original river system, so that the town lost its advantageous traffic location and the center of the regional economy was shifted outside. Its long-term morphology indicates the whole life cycle of this town. The internal cause of its changes is that the local coastal economy with a single structure is quite sensitive to Marine policies, hence the different Marine policies conducted by Song, Yuan, and Ming as well as the openness of port did impact the survival condition of the town.
