The genre of tales of the strange(zhiguai)sets bizarre and otherworldly events in identfable mundane places.Because of this, geography provides a fruitful way to connect the diverse and fragmentary contents of tale ollctions. This article examines Wang Tonggui's Ertan leizeng(Tales for the Ear,Expanded by Categorics)and Qian Xiyan's Kuai yuan(The Garden of Cunning)The two authors have similar chronological backgrounds but distinct geographic experience, making for a fruitful comparison of their geographic imagination. This article uses geography as tool of analysis of their cllections on several levels:the whole book, one category of stories,a geographic area,a single story, and for comparison of two similar stories.
