The Sun Also Rises is Ernest Hemingway's first masterpiece, and has been one everlasting focus for readers and critics since its publication. This essay demonstrates that the novel depicts the emerging fashions of travel and consumption in the transformation from manufacture economy to consumer economy, and holds that travel is the focus of the novel and that the characters have got some spiritual redemption on their road, but have to face cultural communication and conflict on the foreign land. Besides the traumas from WWI, other important but ignored reasons for their frequent unhappiness are the liminal state from their longtime expatriate life in Europe and their economic insufficiency. Ernest Hemingway, thus in his The Sun Also Rises, has inherited and extended the tradition of travel literature in American, even European literature.
