The universal politeness model proposed by Brown and Levinson and the universal politeness principle proposed by Leech have provided a certain guideline in the research of language politeness. However, the so - called " universal politeness" is not universal but culturally specific to a large degree. Compared the English version and Chinese one of Shakespeare~ play The Tragedy ofHamlet , the paper draws the conclusion that in different language and cultural backgrounds, interlocutors have different preference in the use of such politeness maxims such as power maxim, proper addressing maxim and indirectness maxim as well.
