摘要
《天路历程》是最早译介到中国的西方长篇小说,它的中文译本超过了30种,其中以宾为霖的译本影响最大。他的译本并非是最早的,却是第一部完整的并被公认为是最佳的译本,版本最多,在中国读者中也最具影响力。论文所关注的是,身为传教士的宾为霖在翻译此书时所采用的一些特殊策略,宾为霖译本的特点、流传,以及在宾为霖译本的影响下,《天路历程》这部宗教小说如何被中国读者所接受。
The Pilgrim's Progress is the earliest western novel which was rendered into Chinese and introduced into China. There are more than 30 Chinese versions of this religious novel, of which the version by William Chalmers Burns has been the most popular. Although his version is not among the earnest ones, yet it is considered to be the first complete translated work, which is acknowledged to be of the best quality, Also, as his version is found in obviously more editions than any others, it has exerted the widest influence upon Chinese readers. This paper attempts to explore the background and motivation of his translation, as well as his translation strategies. Besides, the paper pays close attention to the characteristics and circulation of his version, as well as to how The Pilgrim's Progress was accepted by Chinese readers thanks to its influence.
