Application status and perspective of high voltage direct current (H VDC) and power electronics technology in 2004 CIGRE are introduced. The issues covered include: the technical and economic challenges in HVDC and flexible AC transmission system (FACTS) application for large power and energy transfer, some new transmission projects based on HVDC and FACTS, and power electronics application and innovations in new areas.
