摘要
《嘉莉妹妹》讲述了一位农村女孩到城市谋生最后成为名演员的故事。本文主要借用了拉康的新精神分析学理论对女主人公进行心理分析 ,从她为满足基本生理需要而忧虑 ,到她对理想自我的塑造 ,最后到她无穷无尽的欲望进行解析。在分析过程中 ,本文也涉及了一些女权主义批评理论 ,旨在说明嘉莉摈弃贤妻良母型而“堕落”成情人型的女性后 ,她如何培养自我独立意识 ,由被动变主动 ,最后成为一位独立的事业型女性。
Theodore Dreiser relates a story of Carrie's rise from a poor country girl to a Broadway star in his masterpiece Sister Carrie . In the novel, Dreiser simply compares human beings such as the heroine Carrie to animals and insects driven by the force of desires. Revealing from this naturalistic viewpoint, the term ' desire' seems to be too general and has the potential risk of simplifying the complexity of the various motivations underlying Carrie's behavior. Thus, an attempt is made in this paper to analyze the heroine's various desires and motivations in a Lacanian approach. There are actually three alternatives for Carrie before she rises to be a successful actress, that is, the Hanson, Drouet, and Hurstwood. In the Hanson's, she is wildly driven by a desire to survive, or a physiological need for bare necessities; in the Drouet's and Hurstwood's, she learns to demand and to fashion her ideal ego or image. Successful and popular as she is at the end of the story, she will never be satisfied or happy due to her incessant desires and limited imagination. Also, in light of feminist criticism, the essay tries to give an account of Carrie's victory and independence by way of analysing her shifts from a potential housewife to a mistress, and finally to a professional woman.
