摘要
本文集中介绍沃福森表面工程研究所自1983年以来的工作，并侧重于在此研究所内中国研究人员的贡献。综述了表面工程的发展与最新进展，并提出在21世纪表面工程面临的挑战与机遇。总结了伯明翰大学在发展表面设计、改善工程零件的经济性和技术性方面所进行的研究工作。
The Present paper focuses on the work of the Wolfson mstitute for Surface Engineering (WISE) since1983, and emphasises the contributions made by Chinese members of the WISE team over that period. Developments and advances in surface engineering are first reviewed,and the challenges and opportunities presented for surface engineering in 2000 and beyond outlined Intensive surface engineering research work centred at the Vniversity of Birniugham directed at the developmenf of designer surfaces for economicully viable technically enhanced engineering components is summarised.
