A post-colonialist point of view leads to the discussion of the different ways and the cultural awareness that the Yangs and Hawkes have showed in translating the cultural features in the Chinese classic A Dream of Red Mansions. Taking from it some idioms as expressive examples, this paper analyses how there is something like 'colonizer's eyes' in Hawkes' translation on the one hand, with the Yangs' as some confronting decolonization on the other. Finally it argues that the cultural dialogue between East and West cannot be reached at the cost of loss of our cultural identity.
