New archaeological discoveries have been reported in recent years from the Guo State graveyard, which was excavated first in the late 1950s. Discovery and excavation of the royal and aristocratic tombs yield large numbers of bronze vessels and jade articles. One tomb, coded M2006, is a real important find. Not far from the east of that of the king's (M2001), the tomb is an earthen one of a rectangular shaft, containing an outer and inner coffin. The tomb owner lies extended on her back, covered with a jade-decorated mask. The tomb is in good state as it has never been disturbed by tomb robbers. The unearthed bronzes include still shiny sacrificial vessels and sets of objects exclusively for burial purpose. The jade objects, either for ritual or funeral purpose, display a big variety. Of them, the openwork bi-disc and other ornaments, all in the shape of a serpent, are of refine craftsmanship. An animal-shaped ornament even bears two human masks in relief. The animals include tiger, dog, rat, bull, pigeon and fish, all shaped realistically and vividly. Special mention should be made of a jade phoenix, whose crest feather demonstrates an astounding preciseness.Archaeologist also uncovered three bronze tripods in set. According to their inscriptions the tomb owner Meng Ji, a daughter from the Shou State or Shou family, was married to her husband, a yuanshi (official rank) of the Guo State. The burial is dated back to the late Western Zhou dynasty.
