After a brief historical survey of this interdisciplinary field of study, the author singles out threemajor areas in the study of the mind: the child's acquisition of language, speech comprehension,and speech production. Two other topics discussed are the biological foundations of language andthe relationship between language and thought. The author argues that while the study of languagehas yielded insights into the nature of the human mind since the 1960's, psycholinguistic study ofthe mind is now paying back its debt to linguistics, yielding insights into the nature of language.
