The Portrait of Man in the Ming Dynasty and The Portrait of Woman in the Ming Dynasty collected by Yantai Museum are two hanging scroll of ancestral portraits.Due to disrepair over a long period of time, the paintings are severely hollowing and warped, while vertical creases are densely distributed. Therefore, they were sent to the Palace Museum’s Conservation Department for testing and emergency conservation.Traces of remounting and renovation were found in both paintings, causing partial loss of the information on original paintings.Meanwhile, because the works have been kept in storage for a long time, few scholars have paid attention to them. Thus, for a long time, the academic circles have not gained sufficient understanding on the two works. This article attempts to verify the date of the two hanging scrolls’creation, identity of the characters portrayed by analyzing the costumes and painting techniques of the characters in the portraits. Then combined with scientific and technological testing data, the methods and characteristics of the restoration were analyzed, while the age and reasons for the remounting were speculated.
