摘要
当代政治经济学家认为经济不平等与威权政治紧密相连。他们声称,经济不平等程度过高时,精英将会因为对再分配与没收财产的惧怕而拒绝与民众妥协,镇压民主运动。然而,无论是跨国回归证据,还是使用历史数据的单一国家研究,对这一理论都仅提供了有限的支持。未来的研究要注意检验民主的不平等理论背后所隐含的假设,并对民主化的政治动力进行更加深入的探讨。
Contemporary political economists assume that the unequal distribution of economic resources is correlated with authoritarianism.They claim that elites have more incentives to repress democratic movements under high economic inequality because they are facing higher expected losses from redistribution and confiscation of properties after democratization.However,neither cross-national evidence nor subnational historical studies provides unambiguous support for the inequality theory of democratization.Future studies should engage in more tests on the assumptions behind the theory and pay more attention to the political driving forces of democratization.
