The theme of“beast eating human”is an important subject of decorative designs on bronzes of the Shang and Zhou dynasties. It usually consists of two parts:the beast and the human or the human head.Origins of this theme can be traced back to the fish-holding kneeling pottery figure in the Shijiahe Culture, which is mainly distributed in the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River in the late Neolithic Age,and patterns of divine figures and beasts on jade vessels in the Liangzhu Culture. The theme is deemed the objectification of the primitive religious prayers for gods’blessings.
