The essence of the“spirit of freedom”manifested in American literature is the“pioneer spirit”.It originates from the collusion of ancient Celtic culture in Northwest Europe and Protestant culture,as well as from the psychological choices resulting from the practical circumstances of early European immigrants. The evolutionary logic of its literary“spirit of freedom”is reflected in three corresponding developmental stages:the pioneering of territorial expansion;the pioneering of traditional moral concepts and the pioneering of one's own values. It is precisely the transmission or development of this pioneering spirit at different times that has led to the inherent contradictions in the construction of the unique“spirit of freedom”in American literature and thereby triggered a bipolar state in action.
