摘要
司登得的《汉英合璧相连字汇》因其简洁清晰的版式获得晚清时期汉语学习者的好评。1918年版的《英华成语合璧字集》是季理斐对司氏词典多次修订后以完全独立的编者身份推出的词典。通过比较,本文发现季氏词典在词目注音、收录、编排、翻译和参见系统等方面沿袭司氏词典一些做法的同时,在上述方面都有提高,增强了其词典的多维语言学习功能。本文通过较为系统地探析前者在词典文本上对后者的继承与发展进一步完善两本词典的谱系研究。
George Carter Stent’s A Chinese and English Vocabulary in the Pekinese Dialect was wellreceived by Chinese learners in late Qing dynasty for its concise and clear layout.The 1918 edition of A Mandarin-Romanized Dictionary of Chinese was published by Donald MacGillivray as a completely independent compiler after his several revisions of Stent’s dictionary.By comparing the two dictionaries,this paper finds that MacGillivray has improved the phonetic notation system,the inclusion,the arrangement,and the translation of headwords as well as the cross-reference system of his dictionary and has enhanced its multi-dimensional functions for language learning while following some ways of treatment in Stent’s dictionary.This paper attempts to make systematic analyses of the continuation and development of MacGillivray’s dictionary as to that of Stent’s,thereby furthering the genealogical research on the two dictionaries in question.
