Wuhan citizens’opening chorus is the first large-scale collective action during the COVID-19 period.By conducting in-depth interviews with 25 Wuhan citizens, this study explores their exposure and attitudes to rumors. Results demonstrate that:1)rumors are circulating through mobile information channels actively, the feature of multimodality strengthens the emotional narrative of this collective action.2)The competition of social meaning confirmation focused on the adjustment of action rules, the interpretation of health information, and the evaluation of this action.3)The prominent characteristic of the community, which can be summarized as"a close neighbor is better than a brother far off,"acts as an impetus to improve the scale and efficiency of collective action.Besides, the social structure also reshaped in the context of relationships.4)The"local,"as the residence of collective memory and shared culture, ensures the continuity of collective action. In summary,Rumors emerged as life narratives during this epidemic, provide an emotional approach for us to integrate into this global society.Rumors have the chance to evolve into a specific culture embedded in social structure by verifying and interpreting themselves in real collective actions.
