The word kelou(壳漏)is first attested in Zen texts of the Five Dynasties which indicates"shell"or more often"the body of a person".From etymological perspectives, kelou has often been regarded as a compound composed of ke"shell, body"and lou"leaking".This paper argues against such a viewpoint and suggests that, kelou should be a fenyinci(分音词),a word derived through the phonetic fission and reduplication of its monosyllabic source,ke(壳),of which the initial and the final are divided and reassigned to two syllables. The second syllable is often composed of the original final and a lateral initial. As a result, kelou cannot be further divided and it does not have a fixed written form.In times as early as the late Tang dynasty and the Five Dynasties,a written variant keluo(壳落)is found.Other written variants of kelou include kelou(壳娄),kelou(壳篓),kelou(坷娄),kelou(克娄),kelou(克?),kelao(壳牢),kela(壳拉),kelan-er(壳栏儿),kela(克拉),kela(窠拉),kuoluo(阔落),kuoluo(廓落),keluo(科罗),keluo(窠罗)which appeared later. In addition, kelou and kelang(壳郎)share similar semantic features and should be treated as semantic cognates.
