“Making everything so it is as even as one” and “everything gets its share” constitute the normative claims of Zhu Xi’s(1130-1200) idea of the world under heaven. Zhu Xi’s interpretation of “reducing that which is too much and augmenting that which is too little” and “everything obtains its correct, appointed nature” in his scholarship on the Changes is a further explanation of his idea of the world under heaven. The order of the world under heaven is a unified order containing diversity, in which all things will return to their natural ideal state. The idea of the world under heaven recognizes the diversity in the ideal state of all things and believes that an individual should not restrict the realization of others in the process of realizing their own ideal state. The contemporary value of Zhu Xi’s idea of the world under heaven lies in its respect for different civilizations to choose their own development paths and not hindering the development of other civilizations in the course of self-realization.
