Efficient tool condition monitoring techniques help to realize intelligent management of tool life and reduce tool usage costs.In this paper,the influence of different wear degrees of ball-end milling cutters on the texture shape of machining tool marks is investigated,and a method is proposed for predicting the wear state(including the position and degree of tool wear)of ball-end milling cutters based on entropy measurement of tool mark texture images.Firstly,data samples are prepared through wear experiments,and the change law of the tool mark texture shape with the tool wear state is analyzed.Then,a two-dimensional sample entropy algorithm is developed to quantify the texture morphology.Finally,the processing parameters and tool attitude are integrated into the prediction process to predict the wear value and wear position of the ball end milling cutter.After testing,the correlation between the predicted value and the standard value of the proposed tool condition monitoring method reaches 95.32%,and the accuracy reaches 82.73%,indicating that the proposed method meets the requirement of tool condition monitoring. 展开更多

According to the cutting characteristics of progressive spiral movement by rotary cutting of the disc cutter, using the broken theory of interaction of compression and shearing, the three-axis force rotary cutting mechanical model of disc cutter was established and the influence of installation radius, the phase difference and the cutter space on the mechanics of disc cutter were analyzed. The results show that on the same radial line of tunneling interface, the boring distance of cutting tools installed on a different radius is not equal. The cutting radial line of tunneling interface is a polyline and its height is determined by phase angle and penetration of cutting tools. Both phase difference and the installation radius between adjacent disc cutters have little effect on the vertical force and rolling force, but increase with the increase in cutter spacing. In addition, when increasing phase difference and cutter space bilaterally, and reducing installation radius simultaneously, the lateral force would be improved. Studies to date have failed to consider gage disc cutters’variable cutting depth and the constraints of cutter-head welds,and have ignored the coupling mechanism between the profile of the full-face rock tunnel-boring machine(TBM)cutter-head and the assembled radius layout of the disc cutters.To solve these problems,an adaptive design method for studying cutter layout was proposed.Taking the bearing stress of the outermost gage disc cutter as an index,the profile of the cutter-head was determined.Using a genetic algorithm and based on the principles of equal life and equal wear,the assembled radii of the cutters were optimally designed.Boundary conditions of non-interference between the cutters,manholes,muck buckets and welding lines were given when a star layout pattern was used on cutters.The cutter-head comprehensive evaluation model was established by adopting relative optimization improvement degree of evaluation indices to achieve dimensional consistency.Exemplifying the MB264-311-8030 mm tape TBM cutter-head,the calculations show that compared with the original layout scheme,among the 51 disc cutters,the largest gap of the cutters’assembled radiuses is only 25.8 mm,which is 0.64%of the cutter-head’s radius and is negligible.The cutter-head’s unbalanced radial force decreases by 62.41%,the overturning moment decreases by 33.22%,and the cutter group’s centroid shift increases by only 18.48%.Each index is better than or approximately equal to the original cutter-head layout scheme,and the equivalent stress and deformation are both smaller;these results fully verify the feasibility and effectiveness of the method. 展开更多

The construction efficiency and quality of tunnel boring machines(TBMs)is largely determined by the service life of cutting tools,which is the result of contact loads in the crushed zone between cutter ring and rock.In this paper,a series of rock breaking tests were conducted with a 216 mm diameter disc cutter and concrete samples.Based on the superposition principle,the distribution of contact loads between disc cutter and rock were obtained by using the truncated singular value decomposition(TSVD).The results show that both the peak value and the whole numerical distribution of the radial strains on the cutter ring increase with the increase of the penetration.The distribution curves of the contact loads show an approximate parabola going downwards,which indicates contact loads are more concentrated.The front non-loading area with a ratio from 1.8%to 5.4%shows an increasing trend with the increase of penetration.However,the change of rear non-loading area is not obvious.It is believed that the conclusions have guidance for the study of rock breaking mechanism and manufacturing process of the disc cutter. 展开更多

When the tunneling boring machine(TBM) cutterhead tunnels, the excessive vibration and damage are a severe engineering problem, thereby the anti-vibration design is a key technology in the disc cutter system. The structure of disc cutter contains many joint interfaces among cutter ring, cutter body, bearings and cutter shaft. On account of the coupling for dynamic contact and the transfer path among joint interface, mechanical behavior of disc cutter becomes extremely complex under the impact of heavy-duty, which puts forward higher requirements for disc cutter design. A multi-degree-of-freedom coupling dynamic model, which contains a cutter ring, a cutter body, two bearings and cutter shaft, is established, considering the external stochastic excitations, bearing nonlinear contact force, multidirectional mutual coupling vibration, etc. Based on the parameters of an actual project and the strong impact external excitations, the modal properties and dynamic responses are analyzed, as well as the cutter shaft and bearings' loads and load transmission law are obtained. Numerical results indicate the maximum radial and axial cutter ring amplitudes of dynamic responses are 0.568 mm and 0.112 mm; the maximum radial and axial vibration velocities are 41.1 mm/s and 38.9 mm/s; the maximum radial and axial vibration accelerations are 94.7 m/s2 and 58.6 m/s2; the maximum swing angle and angular velocity of cutter ring are 0.007° and 0.0074 rad/s, respectively. Finally, the maximum load of bearing roller is 40.3 k N. The proposed research lays a foundation for structure optimization design of disc cutter and cutter base, as well as model selection, modification and fatigue life of the cutter bearing. 展开更多

In order to study rock breaking characteristics of tunnel boring machine(TBM) disc cutter at different rock temperatures,thermodynamic rock breaking mathematical model of TBM disc cutter was established on the basis of rock temperature change by using particle flow code theory and the influence law of interaction mechanism between disc cutter and rock was also numerically simulated.Furthermore,by using the linear cutting experiment platform,rock breaking process of TBM disc cutter at different rock temperatures was well verified by the experiments.Finally,rock breaking characteristics of TBM disc cutter were differentiated and analyzed from microscale perspective.The results indicate the follows.1) When rock temperature increases,the mechanical properties of rock such as hardness,and strength,were greatly reduced,simultaneously the microcracks rapidly grow with the cracks number increasing,which leads to rock breaking load decreasing and improves rock breaking efficiency for TBM disc cutter.2) The higher the rock temperature,the lower the rock internal stress.The stress distribution rules coincide with the Buzin Neske stress circle rules: the maximum stress value is below the cutting edge region and then gradually decreases radiant around; stress distribution is symmetrical and the total stress of rock becomes smaller.3) The higher the rock temperature is,the more the numbers of micro,tensile and shear cracks produced are by rock as well as the easier the rock intrusion,along with shear failure mode mainly showing.4) With rock temperature increasing,the resistance intrusive coefficients of rock and intrusion power decrease obviously,so the specific energy consumption that TBM disc cutter achieves leaping broken also decreases subsequently.5) The acoustic emission frequency remarkably increases along with the temperature increasing,which improves the rock breaking efficiency. 展开更多

The center cutter of a hard rock tunnel boring machine(TBM) is installed on the cutterhead at a small radius and thus bears complex side force.Given this fact,the formation mechanism and change law of the side force suffered by the center cutter were studied.Based on the rock shear failure criterion in combination with the lateral rolling width,a model for predicting the average side force was set up.Besides,a numerical analysis model of the rock fragmentation of the center cutter was established,and the instantaneous load changing features were investigated.Results shows that the inner side of the center cutter can form lateral rolling annulus in rock during the rotary cutting process.The smaller the installation radius is,the greater the cutter side force will be.In a working condition,the side force of the innermost center cutter is 11.66 k N,while it decreases sharply when installation radius increases.Variation tends to be gentle when installation radius is larger than 500 mm,and the side force of the outermost center cutter is reduced to 0.74 k N. 展开更多

Geological adaptability matching design of a disc cutter is the prerequisite of cutter head design for tunnel boring machines(TBMs)and plays an important role in improving the tunneling efficiency of TBMs.The main purpose of the cutter matching design is to evaluate the cutter performance and select the appropriate cutter size.In this paper,a novel evaluation method based on multicriteria decision making(MCDM)techniques was developed to help TBM designers in the process of determining the cutter size.The analytic hierarchy process(AHP)and matter element analysis were applied to obtaining the weights of the cutter evaluation criteria,and the fuzzy comprehensive evaluation and technique for order performance by similarity to ideal solution(TOPSIS)approaches were employed to determine the ranking of the cutters.A case application was offered to illustrate and validate the proposed method.The results of the project case demonstrate that this method is reasonable and feasible for disc cutter size selection in cutter head design. 展开更多

This causes the cutting depth difference between adjacent disc cutters on the tunnel face. A rock-cutting model was established to study the rock fragmentation law between adjacent disc cutters with different polar angles based on particle flow code(PFC). The influence of polar angle of adjacent disc cutters on rock cracks and stresses under different cutter spacing and penetration was studied. Research shows that polar angle difference leads to the discontinuity of rock-fragmentation process by adjacent cutters. The effect of rock-fragmentation is influenced by the cutting depth difference between adjacent cutters. The effect of rock-fragmentation performed best, meanwhile large rock blocks were flaked when the difference of cutting depth is half of the penetration. Too large or small difference of the cutting depth will cause high specific energy consumption of rock fragmentation. The specific energy consumption is relatively small when the difference of cutting depth is half of the penetration. 展开更多

Combined with numerical simulation, the influence of confining stress on cutting process, fracture conditions and cutting efficiencies of soft and hard rock has been conducted on the triaxial testing machine(TRW-3000) designed and manufactured in Central South University(China). Results are obtained by performing analysis on the fracture scopes of cement and granite plates,the characteristics of cutting force in cutting processes and the cutting efficiency. Firstly, the increase of latitude fracture scope and the decrease of longitude fracture scope are both more notable in the tests conducted on cement plates subjected to the increasing confining stresses; secondly, the increase tendency of peak penetration forces obtained from tests conducted on granite plates is more obvious, however, the increase tendencies of average penetration forces achieved from cement and granite plates are close to each other; thirdly, the cutting efficiency could be improved by increasing the spacing between cutters when the confining stress which acts on soft and hard rock increases in a certain degree, and the cutting efficiency of soft rock is more sensitive to the varying confining stresses. 展开更多

Based on the triaxial testing machine and discrete element method, the effects of embedded crack on rock fragmentation are investigated in laboratory tests and a series of numerical investigations are conducted on the effects of discontinuities on cutting characteristics and cutting efficiency. In laboratory tests, five propagation patterns of radial cracks are observed. And in the numerical tests, firstly, it is similar to laboratory tests that cracks ahead of cutters mainly initiate from the crushed zone, and some minor cracks will initiate from joints. The cracks initiating from crushed zones will run through the thinner joints while they will be held back by thick joints. Cracks tend to propagate towards the tips of embedded cracks, and minor cracks will initiate from the tips of embedded cracks, which may result in the decrease of specific area, and disturbing layers play as ‘screens', which will prevent cracks from developing greatly. The peak penetration forces, the consumed energy in the penetration process and the uniaxial compression strength will decrease with the increase of discontinuities. The existence of discontinuities will result in the decrease of the cutting efficiency when the spacing between cutters is 70 mm. Some modifications should be made to improve the efficiency when the rocks containing groups of discontinuities are encountered. 展开更多

The present research is focused on the numerical crack coalescence analysis of the micro-cracks and cracks produced during the cutting action of TBM disc cutters. The linear elastic fracture mechanics(LEFM) concepts and the maximum tangential stress criterion are used to investigate the micro crack propagation and its direction underneath the excavating discs. A higher order displacement discontinuity method with quadratic displacement discontinuity elements is used to estimate the stress intensity factors near the crack tips. Rock cutting mechanisms under single and double type discs are simulated by the proposed numerical method.The main purposes of the present modeling are to simulate the chip formation process of indented rocks by single and double discs.The effects of specific disc parameters(except speed) on the thrust force Ft, the rolling force Fr, and the specific energy ES are investigated. It has been shown that the specific energy(energy required to cut through a unit volume of rock) of the double disc is less than that of the single disc. Crack propagation in rocks under disc cutters is numerically modeled and the optimum ratio of disc spacing S to penetration depth Pd(i.e. S/Pd ratio) of about 10 is obtained, which is in good agreement with the theoretical and experimental results cited in the literature. 展开更多

As a cutting tool,diamond films made by chemical vapor deposition(CVD) outperformed polycrystalline diamond(PCD) sintered under ultrahigh pressure.For example,the longevity of the CVD tools may be 2~5 times that of PCD inserts.In addition,the former cutting paths are strainghter with less chipping on the edge.However,there have been no report on CVD diamond films that were used as a roller scriber for splitting large glass panels.Our research demonstrated that the CVD diamond film could concentrate the energy in a smaller area(about 1/4),so the glass compressed by the tip of the diamond film was under a larger tensile stress in perpendicular to the direction of compression.The tensile stress then initiated the microcracks that were more in line with the direction of the compression. The reason that CVD diamond film could concentrate the compressive stress was due to its 100%diamond content.The high diamond content could allow the tip to be polished sharper.In contrast,the PCD cutting tip contained micro grains of cobalt that were softer than glass.As a result,the compressional stress was spreading out due to the larger area of contact.Consequently,the microcracks initiated at the PCD tip were random and they might not propagate along the direction of cutting. 展开更多

From the traditional concept, form milling cutter is divided into pointed tooth and relieving follow its structure. Relieving shaped cutter is more convenient than pointed tooth milling cutter, because only its rake face is needed to grind after it turn into blunting, so the current books which are used in college almost select relieving shaped cutter in order to introduce how to design the form milling cutter.The curve of the back of tooth of relieving cutter is the transversal which is formed by the rear face of tooth in the end cut plane of the milling cutter. In the past, because of the limit of the manufacturing technology, the curve of the back of tooth is often selected Archimedes’ curve, in order that the shovel-nose tool acquire the uniform motion when the cutter shovel the back, in other word, the rear face of the milling cutter rotate its axis by the new cutting lip, in the same time, it move uniformly to the axis in order to form the surface. Although this curve of the back of tooth meet the fixedness of the form of blade around grinding the cutter, the rear angle of the dot of the cutting lip don’t keep fixedness. With the development of the modern manufacturing technology, the unmanageable problem of many complex curves is already easily solved. So it is need to study the optimum profile of the curve of the back of tooth in theory, and study the design theory of the relieving shaped cutter under the condition of new manufacture, in order to ensure that the rear angle of the dot of the cutting lip keep fixedness after the relieving shaped cutter is grinded. The paper derive the curve profile of tooth of the form cutter and the modifier calculation formula of the profile of the cutter edge from the definition of the rear angle of the cutter, which establish the foundation for the precision design and manufacture of other form cutter. 展开更多

Playing a critical role in transmitting movement and power, the meshing performance of spiral bevel gears has a significant effect on products' operational performance. To evaluate the meshing performance, the accurate three-dimensional(3D) spiral bevel gear models are established through the Pro/E and MATLAB softwares, and the finite element analysis(FEA) methods are applied to the theoretical investigation of the influence of cutter diameter on meshing performance in spiral bevel gears. The results obtained show that the cutter diameter has a significant influence on spiral bevel gears' meshing performance, such as the contact area, contact pressure, bending stress, torsional stiffness and transmission error. 展开更多

A nonlinear pressure controller was presented to track desired feeding pressure for the cutter feeding system(CFS) of trench cutter(TC) in the presence of unknown external disturbances.The feeding pressure control of CFS is subjected to unknown load characteristics of rock or soil; in addition,the geological condition is time-varying.Due to the complex load characteristics of rock or soil,the feeding velocity of TC is related to geological conditions.What is worse,its dynamic model is subjected to uncertainties and its function is unknown.To deal with the particular characteristics of CFS,a novel adaptive fuzzy integral sliding mode control(AFISMC) was designed for feeding pressure control of CFS,which combines the robust characteristics of an integral sliding mode controller and the adaptive adjusting characteristics of an adaptive fuzzy controller.The AFISMC feeding pressure controller is synthesized using the backstepping technique.The stability of the overall closed-loop system consisting of the adaptive fuzzy inference system,integral sliding mode controller and the cutter feeding system is proved using Lyapunov theory.Experiments are conducted on a TC test bench with the AFISMC under different operating conditions.The experimental results demonstrate that the proposed AFISMC feeding pressure controller for CFS gives a superior and robust pressure tracking performance with maximum pressure tracking error within ?0.3 MPa. 展开更多

By analyzing the influencing factors of part quality making of sheet alloy of titanium by vibra cutter, the shape of upper reamer is set as cylinder and wedge-shaped form, and the lower reamer as plain and hemicycle form, and its main structural parameters are defined as well. Then it is validated further that such improved vibra cutter reamer can be used to process curve-edged parts of titanium alloy sheet. The experimental result shows that the titanium alloy sheet parts processed by above equipment have no sharpen angles for convex parts and evident crevasse of concave-edged part. In summary, such improvement can eliminate the free-waved edge and improve the manufacture quality of titanium alloy sheet parts greatly. 展开更多
