Within Chinese co-author networks, most Chinese scholars have come from the same research institutions, that is to say, more international cooperation and exchange are still required for the research of information visualization across different disciplines and regions.Research limitations: This co-author network and co-citation analysis is mainly based on the research field of LIS with a focus of the WoS and CSSCI databases only, further samples are required for more generalized results to increase our understanding on the development trend of information visualization.Practical implications: This study could lead to a better understanding of the applications of information visualization technologies in discovering the development trend of a research field. Originality/value: To the best of our knowledge, this is the first comparative analysis of research subject and intellectual base on information visualization, specifically, from the perspective of contributions of Chinese scholars in this regard. By dividing most frequently cited Chinese literature into two categories(original and non-original research papers), this paper shows the extent of contributions that Chinese domestic scholars have made to the research of information visualization, by revealing the contributions of different types of Chinese domestic papers on information visualization.展开更多

In the mixing parameters estimation, the previously proposed traditional clustering algorithms are sensitive to the initializations of the mixing parameters. To reduce the sensitiveness to the initialization, we propose a new algorithm for the UBSS problem based on anechoic speech mixtures by employing the visual information, i.e., the interaural time difference(ITD) and the interaural level difference(ILD), as the initializations of the mixing parameters. In our algorithm, the video signals are utilized to estimate the distances between microphones and sources, and then the estimations of the ITD and ILD can be obtained. With the sparsity assumption in the time-frequency domain, the Gaussian potential function algorithm is utilized to estimate the mixing parameters by using the ITDs and ILDs as the initializations of the mixing parameters. And the time-frequency masking is used to recover the sources by evaluating the various ITDs and ILDs. Experimental results demonstrate the competitive performance of the proposed algorithm compared with the baseline algorithms.展开更多

In comparison with sequentially coded spoken language and written texts, we are capable of consuming graphical information at a high bandwidth in a parallel fashion, producing a picture worth more than a thousand words. Effective information visualization can be a powerful tool to capture people's attention and quickly communicate large amounts of data and complex information. This is particularly important in the context of communication data, which often describes entities (people, organizations) and their connections through communication. Visual analytics approaches can optimize the user-computer interaction to gain insights into communication networks and learn about their structures. Network visualization is a perfect instrument to better communicate the results of analysis. The precondition for effective information visualization and successful visual reasoning is the capability to draw "good" pictures. Even though communication networks are often large, including thousands or even millions of people, underlying visualization principles are identical to those used for visualizing smaller networks. In this article, you will learn about these principles, giving you the ability to assess the quality of network visualizations and to draw better network pictures by yourself.展开更多

Readers may find it difficult to prioritize which book(s) should be borrowed for a specific purpose. The log data of book loan record may serve as a visible indicator for the more sought-after books by the readers. This paper describes our experimental efforts in exploring various visual techniques to analyze the borrowing patterns of the monographic works in a university library setting. The visual analysis is thought to provide an effective way to extract the book usage information, which may yield new insights into a host of other related technical as well as user behavior issues. Initial experiment has demonstrated that the proposed approach as articulated in this article can actually benefit end-users as well as library collection development personnel in their endeavor of book selections with effective measure.展开更多

To facilitate the decision-making in the health-care and the related areas, in this paper, a two-step content-based medical image retrieval algorithm is proposed. Firstly, in the preprocessing step, the image segmentation is performed to distinguish image objects, and on the basis of the ...展开更多

Information visualization and knowledge domain visualization techniques were adopted to determine how the study of scientific collaboration has evolved. A total of 1,455 articles on scientific cooperation published between 1993 and 2007 were retrieved from the SCI, SSCI and A&HCI databases with a topic search of scientific collaboration or scientific cooperation for the analysis. By using CiteSpace, the knowledge bases, research foci, and research fronts in the field of scientific collaboration were studied. The results indicated that research fronts and research foci are highly consistent in terms of the concept, origin, measurement, and theory of scientific collaboration. It also revealed that research fronts included scientific collaboration networks, international scientific collaboration, social network analysis and techniques, and applications of bibliometrical indicators, webmetrics, and health care related areas.展开更多
