The model employed a 1D heat transfer scheme to compute iteratively the freeze profile until the thickness variable reached the terminating requirement. The calculated 2D heat dissipation from the cell surfaces was converted into the overall 3D heat loss. The potential drop of the system, freeze profile and heat balance were analyzed to evaluate their variation with technical parameters when designing the 150 kA conventional cell based drained cell. The simulation results show that the retrofitted drained cell is able to keep thermal balance under the conditions that the current is 190 kA, the anodic current density is 0.96 A/cm2, the anode-cathode distance is 2.5 cm, the alumina cover is 16 cm thick with a thermal conductivity of 0.20 W/(m·℃ ) and the electrolysis temperature is 946 ℃ .展开更多

A newly assembled pre-stressed retaining system has been proposed to support the shaft for its efficiency, safety and sustainability. Full-scale field tests and numerical analysis were conducted to analyze the base failure of the circular shaft with confined water. The failure process of the shaft was observed on site. The construction process of step-by-step excavation of shaft and layer-by-layer assembly of pre-stressed structure was simulated in detail. Simulation results agree well with the phenomenon on site. The base failure modes present that tensile damage generates at the center of the base due to non-uniform uplift and shear failure occurs along the soil-structure interface. The effects of shaft size and confined water head were also discussed. As a result, a critical ratio of diameter to shaft depth is put forward to assess the size effect of circular shaft. A conclusion that the soil strength should be partially considered in anti-inrushing safety factor calculation is drawn by analysis and comparison of various calculation methods. This research provides a reference for the base stability evaluation of similar shaft subjected to hydraulic uplift.展开更多

In this work, the field measurements were carried out on rail corrugation, track stiffness, and the track dynamic response. A three-dimensional finite element model was developed to investigate the cause of rail corrugation. The constraints on rail vibration from two wheelsets and adjacent wheel-rail interactions were taken into account in the model. According to experimental and simulation results, the suppression measure for rail corrugation was proposed and the suppression mechanism was discussed. It was found that the cause of rail corrugation is related to vertical and lateral vibration of the rails outside the two wheelsets at around 380 Hz. The increased stiffness of the fasteners reduces the vibration energy of the rail and the wheel-rail force. However, simply increasing the stiffness of the fasteners may not be effective in the suppression of rail corrugation. If necessary, the rails need to be grinded to reduce the roughness to a certain level, so that increasing the fastener stiffness can effectively suppress the rail corrugation.展开更多

Equations of conservation of mass, energy and momentum were solved in a three-dimensional transient model using FLOW-3 D software. The mathematical model considered buoyancy and surface tension driving forces. Further, effects of droplet heat content and impact force on weld pool surface deformation were added to the model. The results of simulation showed that an increase in the welding current could increase peak temperature and the maximum velocity in the weld pool. The weld pool dimensions and width of the heat-affected zone(HAZ) were enlarged by increasing the welding current. In addition, dimensionless Peclet, Grashof and surface tension Reynolds numbers were calculated to understand the importance of heat transfer by convection and the roles of various driving forces in the weld pool. In order to validate the model, welding experiments were conducted under several welding currents. The predicted weld pool dimensions were compared with the corresponding experimental results, and good agreement between simulation and preliminary test results was achieved.展开更多
