The governing equations are transformed into a set of three self-similar ordinary differential equations by similarity transformations. These equations are solved numerically using the very efficient shooting method. This study reveals that the dual solutions of the transformed similarity equations for velocity and temperature distributions exist for certain values of the moving parameter, Prandtl number, and Eckert numbers. The reverse heat flux is observed for larger Eckert numbers; that is, heat absorption at the wall occurs.展开更多

Two types of high frequency secondary instabilities are identified. The most amplified mode is centered about the inflection point of the crosswise profile of the boundary layer and is interpreted as inflectional instability, the other occurs in the one third of the boundary layer from the wall. The high frequency disturbances are highly amplified but they also saturate similarly to the primary and nonlinearly generated disturbances. Their main effect in the final breakdown seems interact with the disturbances is developed and thus widens the frequency spectrum to turbulent state.展开更多

The pores blocking models were created based on the standard blocking law and the intermediate blocking law, and then the cake layer models were developed based on the hydrodynamic theory in which the calculation method of porosity of cake layer was newly corrected. The Air-Water-FCC equilibrium catalysts cold model experiment was used to verify the relevant models. Results showed that the calculated values fitted well with experimental data with a relative error of less than 10%.展开更多

The influence of cross-flow velocity and trans-membrane pressure on the permeate flux and the solid holdup in permeate had been investigated. It was found that both the permeate flux and the solid holdup in permeate decreased with time. Moreover, the permeate flux increased with an increasing transmembrane pressure but the influence of cross-flow velocity on the permeate flux was quite complex. Both the permeate flux and the solid holdup in permeate in long term filtration had been studied. The operation of cross-flow microfiltration could be carried out stably for 10 hours with the permeate flux values ranging from 520.5 to 936 L/(m^2·h) at rs=1%, while it could continue in 10 hours with the permeate flux values ranging from 226 to 432 L/(m^2·h) at rs=5%. The solid holdup in permeate had been less than 10 mg/L during the whole operating cycle.展开更多

Numerical experiments, with an arc current of 100 A to 200 A, an arcing distance of 3 mm to 6 mm, and a cross-flow velocity of 10 m/s to 30 m/s, were carried out. The modelling results show that the arc tends to take the shortest path to the anode when deflected by the cross flow; its anode attachment is farther downstream than the cathode one. Furthermore, due to the low input gas flow imposed in this study, the effect of electromagnetic force is important and it influences the crosscut shape of the arc significantly.展开更多

The simulation results show that the boundary condition, bottlenecks and the self-organization affect the traffic flow at the roundabout crossing. Because of the effect of bottlenecks, jams easily appear on the inner roundabout lane. To improve the capacity of the roundabout system, proper values of the enter probability α and the out probability βcan be chosen.展开更多

Both sudden-expansion cross-section (SECS) and sudden-contraction cross-section (SCCS) were investigated. The effects of the SECS and SCCS on flow patterns were discussed and analyzed. Furthermore, flow pattern transition mechanisms resulting in occurrences of different flow patterns were simply discussed and some transition criteria for the flow pattern transitions were deduced by using the non-dimensionlized analysis method.展开更多

Three scenarios of different cross angles are established. The simulations confirm the empirical observations that there is a stripe formation when two streams of pedestrians intersect and the direction of the stripes is perpendicular to the sum of the directional vectors of the two streams. It can be concluded from the numerical simulation results that smaller cross angle results in higher mean speed and lower level of speed fluctuation. Moreover, the detailed pictures of pedestrians' moving behavior at intersections are given as well.展开更多

These two groups form ionic crosslinks between PEEK and PSf; meanwhile, covalent cross links were built between PSf chains with ad- dition of N-(3-aminopropyl)-imidazole. The amphoteric nature of the membrane allows facile proton and anion transport; the IPN structure and the presence of imidazolium cation effectively suppress vanadium ion crossover through the membrane. Therefore, the ASIPN based VRBs show higher Coulombic efficiency and energy efficiency than that assembled with pristine SPEEK and Nation 212 membranes. Our work demonstrates that the ASIPN membranes are promising for VRB applications.展开更多
