Objective Repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation(rTMS)has demonstrated efficacy in enhancing neurocognitive performance in Alzheimer’s disease(AD),but the neurobiological mechanisms linking synaptic pathology,n...Objective Repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation(rTMS)has demonstrated efficacy in enhancing neurocognitive performance in Alzheimer’s disease(AD),but the neurobiological mechanisms linking synaptic pathology,neural oscillatory dynamics,and brain network reorganization remain unclear.This investigation seeks to systematically evaluate the therapeutic potential of rTMS as a non-invasive neuromodulatory intervention through a multimodal framework integrating clinical assessments,molecular profiling,and neurophysiological monitoring.Methods In this prospective double-blind trial,12 AD patients underwent a 14-day protocol of 20 Hz rTMS,with comprehensive multimodal assessments performed pre-and postintervention.Cognitive functioning was quantified using the mini-mental state examination(MMSE)and Montreal cognitive assessment(MOCA),while daily living capacities and neuropsychiatric profiles were respectively evaluated through the activities of daily living(ADL)scale and combined neuropsychiatric inventory(NPI)-Hamilton depression rating scale(HAMD).Peripheral blood biomarkers,specifically Aβ1-40 and phosphorylated tau(p-tau181),were analyzed to investigate the effects of rTMS on molecular metabolism.Spectral power analysis was employed to investigate rTMS-induced modulations of neural rhythms in AD patients,while brain network analyses incorporating topological properties were conducted to examine stimulus-driven network reorganization.Furthermore,systematic assessment of correlations between cognitive scale scores,blood biomarkers,and network characteristics was performed to elucidate cross-modal therapeutic associations.Results Clinically,MMSE and MOCA scores improved significantly(P<0.05).Biomarker showed that Aβ1-40 level increased(P<0.05),contrasting with p-tau181 reduction.Moreover,the levels of Aβ1-40 were positively correlated with MMSE and MOCA scores.Post-intervention analyses revealed significant modulations in oscillatory power,characterized by pronounced reductions in delta(P<0.05)and theta bands(P<0.05),while concurrent enhancements were observed in alpha,beta,and gamma band activities(all P<0.05).Network analysis revealed frequency-specific reorganization:clustering coefficients were significantly decreased in delta,theta,and alpha bands(P<0.05),while global efficiency improvement was exclusively detected in the delta band(P<0.05).The alpha band demonstrated concurrent increases in average nodal degree(P<0.05)and characteristic path length reduction(P<0.05).Further research findings indicate that the changes in the clinical scale HAMD scores before and after rTMS stimulation are negatively correlated with the changes in the blood biomarkers Aβ1-40 and p-tau181.Additionally,the changes in the clinical scales MMSE and MoCA scores were negatively correlated with the changes in the node degree of the alpha frequency band and negatively correlated with the clustering coefficient of the delta frequency band.However,the changes in MMSE scores are positively correlated with the changes in global efficiency of both the delta and alpha frequency bands.Conclusion 20 Hz rTMS targeting dorsolateral prefrontal cortex(DLPFC)significantly improves cognitive function and enhances the metabolic clearance ofβ-amyloid and tau proteins in AD patients.This neurotherapeutic effect is mechanistically associated with rTMS-mediated frequency-selective neuromodulation,which enhances the connectivity of oscillatory networks through improved neuronal synchronization and optimized topological organization of functional brain networks.These findings not only support the efficacy of rTMS as an adjunctive therapy for AD but also underscore the importance of employing multiple assessment methods—including clinical scales,blood biomarkers,and EEG——in understanding and monitoring the progression of AD.This research provides a significant theoretical foundation and empirical evidence for further exploration of rTMS applications in AD treatment.展开更多

The effect of the model error is investigated and a corresponding theorem is developed. The effect of the parameter perturbations and the measurement noise is investigated through simulations. Brain functional networks model the brain's ability to exchange information across different regions,aiding in the understanding of the cognitive process of human visual attention during target searching,thereby c...Brain functional networks model the brain's ability to exchange information across different regions,aiding in the understanding of the cognitive process of human visual attention during target searching,thereby contributing to the advancement of camouflage evaluation.In this study,images with various camouflage effects were presented to observers to generate electroencephalography(EEG)signals,which were then used to construct a brain functional network.The topological parameters of the network were subsequently extracted and input into a machine learning model for training.The results indicate that most of the classifiers achieved accuracy rates exceeding 70%.Specifically,the Logistic algorithm achieved an accuracy of 81.67%.Therefore,it is possible to predict target camouflage effectiveness with high accuracy without the need to calculate discovery probability.The proposed method fully considers the aspects of human visual and cognitive processes,overcomes the subjectivity of human interpretation,and achieves stable and reliable accuracy.展开更多

The AFGLVQ adjusts the centers of the RBF while the VRLS updates the connection weights of the network. The identification algorithm has the properties of rapid convergence and persistent adaptability that make it suitable for real-time control. Secondly, on the basis of the one-step ahead RBF predictor, the control law is optimized iteratively through a numerical stable Davidon's least squares-based (SDLS) minimization approach. A radial basis function (RBF) neural network model was trained by the input-output data of impedance. A fuzzy neural network controller was designed to control the impedance response. The RBF neural network model was used to test the fuzzy neural network controller. The results show that the RBF model output can imitate actual output well, the maximal error is not beyond 20 m-, the training time is about 1 s by using 20 neurons, and the mean squared errors is 141.9 m-2. The impedance of the PEMFC stack is controlled within the optimum range when the load changes, and the adjustive time is about 3 min.展开更多

During the iteration procedure of the algorithm, the centers of the neural network were optimized by using the gradient method with these optimized width values. The computational efficiency was maintained by using the multi-threading technique. SODM-RBFNN consists of two RBF neural network models: one is a running model used to predict the product yields of fluid catalytic cracking unit(FCCU) and optimize its operating parameters; the other is a learning model applied to construct or correct a RBF neural network. The running model can be updated by the learning model according to an accuracy criterion. The simulation results of a five-lump kinetic model exhibit its accuracy and generalization capabilities, and practical application in FCCU illustrates its effectiveness.展开更多

Direct online measurement on product quality of industrial processes is difficult to be realized,which leads to a large number of unlabeled samples in modeling data.Therefore,it needs to employ semi-supervised learnin...Direct online measurement on product quality of industrial processes is difficult to be realized,which leads to a large number of unlabeled samples in modeling data.Therefore,it needs to employ semi-supervised learning(SSL)method to establish the soft sensor model of product quality.Considering the slow time-varying characteristic of industrial processes,the model parameters should be updated smoothly.According to this characteristic,this paper proposes an online adaptive semi-supervised learning algorithm based on random vector functional link network(RVFLN),denoted as OAS-RVFLN.By introducing a L2-fusion term that can be seen a weight deviation constraint,the proposed algorithm unifies the offline and online learning,and achieves smoothness of model parameter update.Empirical evaluations both on benchmark testing functions and datasets reveal that the proposed OAS-RVFLN can outperform the conventional methods in learning speed and accuracy.Finally,the OAS-RVFLN is applied to the coal dense medium separation process in coal industry to estimate the ash content of coal product,which further verifies its effectiveness and potential of industrial application.展开更多

The fact that different types of links have different degree of Self-Similarity is also obtained. By constructing appropriate network architecture and neural functions, functional networks can be used to model the Internet end-to-end nonlinear delay time series. Furthermore, by using adaptive parameter studying algorithm, the nonstationarity can also be well modeled. It was proposed to recognize the ball carrier’s head pose by classifying its yaw angle to determine his vision range and the court situation of the sportsman within his vision range can be further learned. In basketball match videos characterized by cluttered background, fast motion of the sportsmen and low resolution of their head images, and the covariance descriptor, were adopted to fuse multiple visual features of the head region, which can be seen as a point on the Riemannian manifold and then mapped to the tangent space. Then, the classification of head yaw angle was directly completed in this space through the trained multiclass LogitBoost. In order to describe the court situation of all sportsmen within the ball carrier’s vision range, artificial potential field (APF)-based information was introduced. Finally, the behavior of the ball carrier—shooting, passing and dribbling, was predicted using radial basis function (RBF) neural network as the classifier. Experimental results show that the average prediction accuracy of the proposed method can reach 80% on the video recorded in basketball matches, which validates its effectiveness.展开更多
To improve the global search ability and imaging quality of electrical resistivity imaging(ERI) inversion, a two-stage learning ICPSO algorithm of radial basis function neural network(RBFNN) based on information crite...To improve the global search ability and imaging quality of electrical resistivity imaging(ERI) inversion, a two-stage learning ICPSO algorithm of radial basis function neural network(RBFNN) based on information criterion(IC) and particle swarm optimization(PSO) is presented. In the proposed method, IC is applied to obtain the hidden layer structure by calculating the optimal IC value automatically and PSO algorithm is used to optimize the centers and widths of the radial basis functions in the hidden layer. Meanwhile, impacts of different information criteria to the inversion results are compared, and an implementation of the proposed ICPSO algorithm is given. The optimized neural network has one hidden layer with 261 nodes selected by AKAIKE's information criterion(AIC) and it is trained on 32 data sets and tested on another 8 synthetic data sets. Two complex synthetic examples are used to verify the feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed method with two learning stages. The results show that the proposed method has better performance and higher imaging quality than three-layer and four-layer back propagation neural networks(BPNNs) and traditional least square(LS) inversion.展开更多
In this paper,a model reference adaptive control(MRAC)augmentation method of a linear controller is proposed for air-breathing hypersonic vehicle(AHV)during inlet unstart.With the development of hypersonic flight tech...In this paper,a model reference adaptive control(MRAC)augmentation method of a linear controller is proposed for air-breathing hypersonic vehicle(AHV)during inlet unstart.With the development of hypersonic flight technology,hypersonic vehicles have been gradually moving to the stage of weaponization.During the maneuvers,changes of attitude,Mach number and the back pressure can cause the inlet unstart phenomenon of scramjet.Inlet unstart causes significant changes in the aerodynamics of AHV,which may lead to deterioration of the tracking performance or instability of the control system.Therefore,we firstly establish the model of hypersonic vehicle considering inlet unstart,in which the changes of aerodynamics caused by inlet unstart is described as nonlinear uncertainty.Then,an MRAC augmentation method of a linear controller is proposed and the radial basis function(RBF)neural network is used to schedule the adaptive parameters of MRAC.Furthermore,the Lyapunov function is constructed to prove the stability of the proposed method.Finally,numerical simulations show that compared with the linear control method,the proposed method can stabilize the attitude of the hypersonic vehicle more quickly after the inlet unstart,which provides favorable conditions for inlet restart,thus verifying the effectiveness of the augmentation method proposed in the paper.展开更多

The parameters of the fuzzy rules are tuned with adaptive schemes. To attenuate chattering effectively, the discontinuous control term is approximated by an adaptive PI control structure. The bound of the discontinuous control term is assumed to be unknown and estimated by an adaptive mechanism. Based on the Lyapunov stability theory, an adaptive repetitive control law is proposed to guarantee the closed-loop stability and the tracking performance. By means of FBFNs, which avoid the nonlinear parameterization from entering into the adaptive repetitive control, the controller singularity problem is solved. The proposed approach does not require an exact structure of the system dynamics, and the proposed controller is utilized to control a model of permanent-magnet linear synchronous motor subject to significant disturbances and parameter uncertainties. 文摘Brain functional networks model the brain's ability to exchange information across different regions,aiding in the understanding of the cognitive process of human visual attention during target searching,thereby contributing to the advancement of camouflage evaluation.In this study,images with various camouflage effects were presented to observers to generate electroencephalography(EEG)signals,which were then used to construct a brain functional network.The topological parameters of the network were subsequently extracted and input into a machine learning model for training.The results indicate that most of the classifiers achieved accuracy rates exceeding 70%.Specifically,the Logistic algorithm achieved an accuracy of 81.67%.Therefore,it is possible to predict target camouflage effectiveness with high accuracy without the need to calculate discovery probability.The proposed method fully considers the aspects of human visual and cognitive processes,overcomes the subjectivity of human interpretation,and achieves stable and reliable accuracy.

文摘An enhanced trajectory linearization control (TLC) structure based on radial basis function neural network (RBFNN) and its application on an aerospace vehicle (ASV) flight control system are presensted. The influence of unknown disturbances and uncertainties is reduced by RBFNN thanks to its approaching ability, and a robustifying itera is used to overcome the approximate error of RBFNN. The parameters adaptive adjusting laws are designed on the Lyapunov theory. The uniform ultimate boundedness of all signals of the composite closed-loop system is proved based on Lyapunov theory. Finally, the flight control system of an ASV is designed based on the proposed method. Simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness and robustness of the designed approach.

文摘The control law design for a near-space hypersonic vehicle(NHV) is highly challenging due to its inherent nonlinearity,plant uncertainties and sensitivity to disturbances.This paper presents a novel functional link network(FLN) control method for an NHV with dynamical thrust and parameter uncertainties.The approach devises a new partially-feedback-functional-link-network(PFFLN) adaptive law and combines it with the nonlinear generalized predictive control(NGPC) algorithm.The PFFLN is employed for approximating uncertainties in flight.Its weights are online tuned based on Lyapunov stability theorem for the first time.The learning process does not need any offline training phase.Additionally,a robust controller with an adaptive gain is designed to offset the approximation error.Finally,simulation results show a satisfactory performance for the NHV attitude tracking,and also illustrate the controller's robustness.
文摘In this paper, adaptive identification and control of nonlinear dynamical systems are investigated using radial basis function networks (RBF). Firstly, a novel approach to train the RBF is introduced, which employs an adaptive fuzzy generalized learning vector quantization (AFGLVQ) technique and recursive least squares algorithm with variable forgetting factor (VRLS). The AFGLVQ adjusts the centers of the RBF while the VRLS updates the connection weights of the network. The identification algorithm has the properties of rapid convergence and persistent adaptability that make it suitable for real-time control. Secondly, on the basis of the one-step ahead RBF predictor, the control law is optimized iteratively through a numerical stable Davidon's least squares-based (SDLS) minimization approach. Four nonlinear examples are simulated to demonstrate the effectiveness of the identification and control algorithms.

文摘An adaptive integral dynamic surface control approach based on fully tuned radial basis function neural network (FTRBFNN) is presented for a general class of strict-feedback nonlinear systems,which may possess a wide class of uncertainties that are not linearly parameterized and do not have any prior knowledge of the bounding functions.FTRBFNN is employed to approximate the uncertainty online,and a systematic framework for adaptive controller design is given by dynamic surface control. The control algorithm has two outstanding features,namely,the neural network regulates the weights,width and center of Gaussian function simultaneously,which ensures the control system has perfect ability of restraining different unknown uncertainties and the integral term of tracking error introduced in the control law can eliminate the static error of the closed loop system effectively. As a result,high control precision can be achieved.All signals in the closed loop system can be guaranteed bounded by Lyapunov approach.Finally,simulation results demonstrate the validity of the control approach.

文摘A global approximation based adaptive radial basis function(RBF) neural network control strategy is proposed for the trajectory tracking control of supercavitating vehicles(SV).A nominal model is built firstly with the unknown disturbance.Next, the control scheme is established consisting of a computed torque controller(CTC) for the practical vehicle and an RBF neural network controller to estimate model error between the practical vehicle and the nominal model. The network weights are adapted by employing a Lyapunov-based design. Then it is shown by the Lyapunov theory that the trajectory tracking errors asymptotically converge to a small neighborhood of zero. The control performance of the proposed controller is illustrated by simulation.
文摘Target maneuver trajectory prediction plays an important role in air combat situation awareness and threat assessment.To solve the problem of low prediction accuracy of the traditional prediction method and model,a target maneuver trajectory prediction model based on phase space reconstruction-radial basis function(PSR-RBF)neural network is established by combining the characteristics of trajectory with time continuity.In order to further improve the prediction performance of the model,the rival penalized competitive learning(RPCL)algorithm is introduced to determine the structure of RBF,the Levenberg-Marquardt(LM)and the hybrid algorithm of the improved particle swarm optimization(IPSO)algorithm and the k-means are introduced to optimize the parameter of RBF,and a PSR-RBF neural network is constructed.An independent method of 3D coordinates of the target maneuver trajectory is proposed,and the target manuver trajectory sample data is constructed by using the training data selected in the air combat maneuver instrument(ACMI),and the maneuver trajectory prediction model based on the PSR-RBF neural network is established.In order to verify the precision and real-time performance of the trajectory prediction model,the simulation experiment of target maneuver trajectory is performed.The results show that the prediction performance of the independent method is better,and the accuracy of the PSR-RBF prediction model proposed is better.The prediction confirms the effectiveness and applicability of the proposed method and model.

文摘A neural network model and fuzzy neural network controller was designed to control the inner impedance of a proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) stack. A radial basis function (RBF) neural network model was trained by the input-output data of impedance. A fuzzy neural network controller was designed to control the impedance response. The RBF neural network model was used to test the fuzzy neural network controller. The results show that the RBF model output can imitate actual output well, the maximal error is not beyond 20 m-, the training time is about 1 s by using 20 neurons, and the mean squared errors is 141.9 m-2. The impedance of the PEMFC stack is controlled within the optimum range when the load changes, and the adjustive time is about 3 min.

文摘A self-organizing radial basis function(RBF) neural network(SODM-RBFNN) was presented for predicting the production yields and operating optimization. Gradient descent algorithm was used to optimize the widths of RBF neural network with the initial parameters obtained by k-means learning method. During the iteration procedure of the algorithm, the centers of the neural network were optimized by using the gradient method with these optimized width values. The computational efficiency was maintained by using the multi-threading technique. SODM-RBFNN consists of two RBF neural network models: one is a running model used to predict the product yields of fluid catalytic cracking unit(FCCU) and optimize its operating parameters; the other is a learning model applied to construct or correct a RBF neural network. The running model can be updated by the learning model according to an accuracy criterion. The simulation results of a five-lump kinetic model exhibit its accuracy and generalization capabilities, and practical application in FCCU illustrates its effectiveness.
文摘In chaotic communication system, the useful signal is hidden in chaotic signal, so the general method does not work well. Due to the random feature of chaotic signal, a functional networkbased method is presented. In this method, the neural functions are selected from some complete function set for the functional network to reconstruct the chaotic signal, so the useful signal hidden in chaotic background is extracted. In addition, its learning algorithm is presented here and the example proves its good preformance.

文摘With the continuous development of network func-tions virtualization(NFV)and software-defined networking(SDN)technologies and the explosive growth of network traffic,the requirement for computing resources in the network has risen sharply.Due to the high cost of edge computing resources,coordinating the cloud and edge computing resources to improve the utilization efficiency of edge computing resources is still a considerable challenge.In this paper,we focus on optimiz-ing the placement of network services in cloud-edge environ-ments to maximize the efficiency.It is first proved that,in cloud-edge environments,placing one service function chain(SFC)integrally in the cloud or at the edge can improve the utilization efficiency of edge resources.Then a virtual network function(VNF)performance-resource(P-R)function is proposed to repre-sent the relationship between the VNF instance computing per-formance and the allocated computing resource.To select the SFCs that are most suitable to deploy at the edge,a VNF place-ment and resource allocation model is built to configure each VNF with its particular P-R function.Moreover,a heuristic recur-sive algorithm is designed called the recursive algorithm for max edge throughput(RMET)to solve the model.Through simula-tions on two scenarios,it is verified that RMET can improve the utilization efficiency of edge computing resources.

文摘Direct online measurement on product quality of industrial processes is difficult to be realized,which leads to a large number of unlabeled samples in modeling data.Therefore,it needs to employ semi-supervised learning(SSL)method to establish the soft sensor model of product quality.Considering the slow time-varying characteristic of industrial processes,the model parameters should be updated smoothly.According to this characteristic,this paper proposes an online adaptive semi-supervised learning algorithm based on random vector functional link network(RVFLN),denoted as OAS-RVFLN.By introducing a L2-fusion term that can be seen a weight deviation constraint,the proposed algorithm unifies the offline and online learning,and achieves smoothness of model parameter update.Empirical evaluations both on benchmark testing functions and datasets reveal that the proposed OAS-RVFLN can outperform the conventional methods in learning speed and accuracy.Finally,the OAS-RVFLN is applied to the coal dense medium separation process in coal industry to estimate the ash content of coal product,which further verifies its effectiveness and potential of industrial application.

文摘End-to-end delay is one of the most important characteristics of Internet end-to-end packet dynamics, which can be applied to quality of services (OoS) management, service level agreement (SLA) management, congestion control algorithm development, etc. Nonstationarity and nonlinearity are found by the analysis of various delay series measured from different links. The fact that different types of links have different degree of Self-Similarity is also obtained. By constructing appropriate network architecture and neural functions, functional networks can be used to model the Internet end-to-end nonlinear delay time series. Furthermore, by using adaptive parameter studying algorithm, the nonstationarity can also be well modeled. The numerical results show that the provided functional network architecture and adaptive algorithm can precisely characterize the Internet end-to-end delay dynamics.

文摘A new vision-based approach was presented for predicting the behavior of the ball carrier—shooting, passing and dribbling in basketball matches. It was proposed to recognize the ball carrier’s head pose by classifying its yaw angle to determine his vision range and the court situation of the sportsman within his vision range can be further learned. In basketball match videos characterized by cluttered background, fast motion of the sportsmen and low resolution of their head images, and the covariance descriptor, were adopted to fuse multiple visual features of the head region, which can be seen as a point on the Riemannian manifold and then mapped to the tangent space. Then, the classification of head yaw angle was directly completed in this space through the trained multiclass LogitBoost. In order to describe the court situation of all sportsmen within the ball carrier’s vision range, artificial potential field (APF)-based information was introduced. Finally, the behavior of the ball carrier—shooting, passing and dribbling, was predicted using radial basis function (RBF) neural network as the classifier. Experimental results show that the average prediction accuracy of the proposed method can reach 80% on the video recorded in basketball matches, which validates its effectiveness.

文摘To improve the global search ability and imaging quality of electrical resistivity imaging(ERI) inversion, a two-stage learning ICPSO algorithm of radial basis function neural network(RBFNN) based on information criterion(IC) and particle swarm optimization(PSO) is presented. In the proposed method, IC is applied to obtain the hidden layer structure by calculating the optimal IC value automatically and PSO algorithm is used to optimize the centers and widths of the radial basis functions in the hidden layer. Meanwhile, impacts of different information criteria to the inversion results are compared, and an implementation of the proposed ICPSO algorithm is given. The optimized neural network has one hidden layer with 261 nodes selected by AKAIKE's information criterion(AIC) and it is trained on 32 data sets and tested on another 8 synthetic data sets. Two complex synthetic examples are used to verify the feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed method with two learning stages. The results show that the proposed method has better performance and higher imaging quality than three-layer and four-layer back propagation neural networks(BPNNs) and traditional least square(LS) inversion.

文摘In this paper,a model reference adaptive control(MRAC)augmentation method of a linear controller is proposed for air-breathing hypersonic vehicle(AHV)during inlet unstart.With the development of hypersonic flight technology,hypersonic vehicles have been gradually moving to the stage of weaponization.During the maneuvers,changes of attitude,Mach number and the back pressure can cause the inlet unstart phenomenon of scramjet.Inlet unstart causes significant changes in the aerodynamics of AHV,which may lead to deterioration of the tracking performance or instability of the control system.Therefore,we firstly establish the model of hypersonic vehicle considering inlet unstart,in which the changes of aerodynamics caused by inlet unstart is described as nonlinear uncertainty.Then,an MRAC augmentation method of a linear controller is proposed and the radial basis function(RBF)neural network is used to schedule the adaptive parameters of MRAC.Furthermore,the Lyapunov function is constructed to prove the stability of the proposed method.Finally,numerical simulations show that compared with the linear control method,the proposed method can stabilize the attitude of the hypersonic vehicle more quickly after the inlet unstart,which provides favorable conditions for inlet restart,thus verifying the effectiveness of the augmentation method proposed in the paper.

文摘An adaptive repetitive control scheme is presented for a class of nonlinearly parameterized systems based on the fuzzy basis function network (FBFN). The parameters of the fuzzy rules are tuned with adaptive schemes. To attenuate chattering effectively, the discontinuous control term is approximated by an adaptive PI control structure. The bound of the discontinuous control term is assumed to be unknown and estimated by an adaptive mechanism. Based on the Lyapunov stability theory, an adaptive repetitive control law is proposed to guarantee the closed-loop stability and the tracking performance. By means of FBFNs, which avoid the nonlinear parameterization from entering into the adaptive repetitive control, the controller singularity problem is solved. The proposed approach does not require an exact structure of the system dynamics, and the proposed controller is utilized to control a model of permanent-magnet linear synchronous motor subject to significant disturbances and parameter uncertainties. The simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method.
