In thirty years of her marriage, Minnie Wright, the heroine of Susan Glaspell's play Trifles, has changed from a lovely, active maiden into a passively cynical, self-closed woman with suppressed psyche, thus ultimately murdered her husband who has been suffocating her soul. The essential changes of her character are brought about through the changes in her costumes, the dead canary and the unfinished quilt pieces. Minnie Wright's tragedy has gone far beyond what the play conveys, it reveals to readers the profound philosophy that people will surely encounter spiritual breakdown and run into tragedy if they lack sincere friendship and partnership.
