Three Passes in Yiyang and their names can be dated back to the three forts named Ming E, Zhi Yuan and Da Sui since the Spring and Autumn. In fact, the expression 'Three Passes in Yiyang', advanced in Southern Liang Dynasty, was a good depiction of the relationship between Three Passes and the geographical position in Eastern Jin, Song and Qi Dynasty, and became their conventional names since then. The names can even be dated back to Western Zhou or the Spring and Autumn. The historical importance of Yiyang and Three Passes depended on their military strategic positions along the frontiers of fighting and military transportation. Nevertheless, the limitation and vulnerability of Three Passes in Yiyang also derived from singular function of geographical or military position.
